If I Were This Flexible and Balanced, I Wouldn’t Worry About Bruising!

Hello Again:

When we’re ready to get in shape and feel confident and in control, it’s an excellent opportunity to consider a martial arts program. No matter what kind of school or discipline that we may decide to pursue, we will find that martial arts can also help us overcome our tendency to bruise easily to some degree. There’s a good chance that it might cause a few more bruises, but depending on the martial art style, it also might not. What are the choices that we have in front of us?

First, there are a few ways that martial arts in general will help us avoid bruising. For instance, most martial arts are considered aerobic activities; as your cardiovascular health goes up, your blood vessels will become much tougher and more flexible, and they will be less inclined to break or to allow blood to well to the skin surface, creating bruises.

Martial arts will also help us get results when it comes to increasing our metabolism, and we will likely have little difficulty in breaking a sweat. A quickened metabolism will help our body heal itself much faster, and we will also find that when we sweat, we are relieving our system of certain impurities, which our immune system would otherwise have to take care of. This can all contribute towards our healing bruises more effectively.

Martial arts classes will also teach us how to fall correctly. One of the first lessons that many schools will teach will be showing us how to fall without hurting ourselves or bruising.

Do keep in mind, however, that when it comes to evaluating martial arts, we are also going to have to consider that we may open ourselves to getting new bruises as well. This will not be something that is true across the board; there are many different disciplines available that will tell us all about how to best go about enjoying physical and mental health, and some of these schools involve no physical contact at all.

The ones to watch out for are any martial arts schools that work towards tournament styles, where combat is actually the end goal. Similarly, even when the martial arts school itself is not training towards tournaments, we will discover that there are some disciplines that are based on full contact. The Korean martial art, Tae Kwon Do, with its emphasis on kicks might fall under this, as will Jujitsu, which is Japanese grappling.

However, Tai Chi is also considered a martial art, and we will find that if you look for Tai Chi classes that are more interested in flexibility than combat, you should be fine; typically these classes involve no contact whatsoever. Also depending on the school and the style Aikido can be relatively gentle, as it is all about the redirection of force rather than the absorption of such.

Take some time to consider if martial arts might fit into your plan to help you reduce bruising.
