Bruises Be Banned » Blog Archive » Is There a Relationship Between Scurvy and Bruising Easily?

Hello Again:

When we hear the term scurvy, our first thought might be about pirates (movie pirates, not  pirates from Somalia) who sail the seven seas.  The truth of the matter is that scurvy is a condition that can be contracted by just about anyone who is not paying attention to their diet, and one way in which it can manifest is through the appearance of bruises on our body.  We’ve all had the experience of looking down and simply not knowing where our bruise came from?  Easy bruising can be a sign of scurvy, and when we’re looking to figure this bruising problem out, we need to take a moment and determine what we should know about this relatively rare condition in modern societies (scurvy not piracy).

The first thing we should evaluate is what causes scurvy to occur in the first place.  At the most basic level, we will learn that scurvy is a condition that results from an extreme deficiency of vitamin C in our system.  Vitamin C is found in most fruits and vegetables with a special concentration in citrus fruits, and if we go too long without it, our body will start letting us know about it.  Vitamin C is an essential part of the way that our bodies function, and when you think about easy bruising as a visible sign of the damage that your body has been a party to, there are a lot of things that we need to consider.  The reason why scurvy has been associated with pirates and with seafaring in general is because in days past, it was difficult to get fresh fruits and vegetables on a long voyage.  However, we should make certain that we take the necessary steps to avoid getting scurvy on dry land.

The link that scurvy has with easy bruising is due to the fact that vitamin C helps your body create collagen, a substance that helps make our skin firm and elastic.  With that in mind, it also makes our skin more protective of the tissues that lie beneath the skin.  When that elasticity and firmness goes away due to decreased collagen product (which occurs in some people as they age), we find that it is much easier to get bruised.  Because our skin is not as protective as it should be, we’ll see a lot more inflammation and discoloration when you bump ourselves.  Even if we wouldn’t have bruised so badly a few years ago, a decrease of vitamin C in our system can lead to some fairly dramatic bruise darkening.

Take the time to really consider what our options are going to be when we are looking at making sure that we are going to be able to get the right kind of nutrition into our body.  Scurvy is certainly no laughing matter, and as we might guess, it is easier to contract than we might think.  However, we know that we have been getting enough vitamin C in our diet, if we’re following the daily Bruises Be Banned program.  This uniquely formulated, all natural treatment program can help us reduce bruising or prevent bruising altogether.  Remember the only  thing you have to lose by not taking Bruises Be Banned is your social life due to your ugly bruises.
