Hello Again:

Bruises are injuries just below the skin with no open wounds to the skin. This usually happens when your body collides with or bumps into something hard. The blood from broken capillaries seeps into the tissues around the affected area and forms a bruise, which is also known as a contusion.

Easy bruising is a very common condition and should not be the cause of any undue concern. Usually bruises will begin to disappear within a few days of the impact that caused them, and pain will not be present after a day or two has passed.

Grandma’s idea to use an ice pack on a bruise is an old home remedy that actually works. An ice pack used for about seven minutes will alleviate pain, while reducing the amount of blood that seeps from the damaged capillaries. An ice pack, or a cloth wrapped around ice is the best way to avoid additional injury that can be caused by applying ice directly to the bruise. You can repeat the process every 20 minutes until the pain is gone.

Understand that you using an ice pack improperly or applying ice directly to a bruise can cause more damage to the area than what was caused by the impact that created the bruise. Mind your application times, do not shorten your intervals between applications, and stop all applications when your pain is gone.

Once the pain is gone and the bruises are still visibly red, leave them uncovered for about 5 hours, then apply a hot compress for 15-20 minutes about once an hour, as as often as you like. Be sure the compress is warm rather than overly hot, and this application will help the body rejuvenate and stimulate the re-absorption of the blood which will facilitate the healing of your skin, muscle tissues, and the capillary walls to overcome the damage caused by an impact.

One thing you should keep in mind that you can help reduce the pain and swelling associated with bruising by simply elevating the affected area above your heart to minimize the blood flow to the injured area. If you become ill or lightheaded by elevating the injured area, it might be wise to see your doctor.

Another method of improving the healing process for a new bruise is to use arnica gel applied topically to the affected area at least three to four times a day. It will ease any swelling and help your skin regain its original color. A tincture of arnica will also work, provided you can determine the precise combination of the arnica herb and alcohol. With most tinctures one part water to five parts alcohol is used, but you’ll have to determine the proper mixture for your individual situation. Using apple cider vinegar in the same manner as an arnica tincture has proved to be beneficial for some people.
